Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about OccupationEx, the free career exploration game.

What is OccupationEx?

OccupationEx is a free educational game that helps students explore careers. For each of 159 careers across 13 fields, you take short lessons and quick quizzes, then work simulated shifts where you make the kinds of decisions people in that job make. Each career also shows real pay, schooling, and job outlook.

Is OccupationEx free?

Yes. OccupationEx is completely free, with no ads and nothing to buy. Coins and items in the game are pretend and have no real value.

Who is OccupationEx for?

It’s made for high school and early college students, about ages 15 to 20, who are figuring out what they might want to do. Teachers and school counselors use it in career, business, and advisory classes.

Do I need an account?

No. You can play right away as a guest, and your progress saves in your browser. If you want to keep your progress on several devices, you can make a free account with a nickname.

What careers can I explore?

There are 159 careers in 13 fields, from nursing, engineering, and law to the skilled trades, business, technology, and the arts. You can search by name, browse by field, or filter by pay and schooling.

How do I find careers that fit me?

Take the match quiz: 10 quick questions that take about 2 minutes. It suggests careers that fit what you like. Each career also has a short Career check that shows which version of the job might suit you.

How does each career work?

Each career starts with 3 short lessons, then you work shifts where you make real decisions. Finish 10 shifts to earn a certificate. If you get a lesson question wrong, the lesson comes back so you can reread it and try again.

Where do the pay and job facts come from?

Pay, schooling, and job outlook come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. Everyday job tasks come from O*NET, the U.S. Department of Labor’s job database. The people, companies, and numbers inside the simulations are made up for practice.

How can teachers use OccupationEx?

Teachers can create a class code, give assignments, and see student progress on a teacher dashboard. Students without accounts can send a progress code instead. A built-in teacher guide has five ready-to-use lessons. It works on Chromebooks, laptops, tablets, and phones with nothing to install.

Is OccupationEx safe for students?

OccupationEx has no ads, never sells information, and doesn’t use advertising trackers. Students can play as guests with no sign-up, and class boards can only be seen by signed-in classmates who have the class code. See the privacy policy and the For schools page for details.

Who made OccupationEx?

OccupationEx was created by Nathan Klug to help students figure out which career to pursue and to give everyone basic background knowledge about each career.

Is this real career or financial advice?

No. OccupationEx is for learning and exploring. The lessons and simulations are simplified, and they don’t train or qualify you for a job. Talk with a school counselor and check current sources before making big decisions.
